New in Town

New And Noteworthy

Sea & Smoke {2690 Via de la Valle, Del Mar}

The latest brainchild of Chef Matt Gordon of Urban Solace and Solace & the moonlight lounge is Sea & Smoke, an all-day meal service in the Flower Hill Promenade. Boasting a 2,300-square-foot patio and wood-fired oven, Sea & Smoke is sure to live up to the rest of Gordon’s restaurants, but with a more wood oven-driven concept. The dinner menu will cover everything from Oven-Roasted Artisan Olives, to Cilantro Cured Sea Bass with grapefruit and compressed honey dew, to a 32-Day Dry-Aged Natural Striploin, carved to order.

Salt & Cleaver {3805 Fifth Avenue, Hillcrest}

Previously known as Abe Froman’s (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” anyone?), Salt & Cleaver is coming to Hillcrest and bringing 19 varieties of sausage with them. The links include an IPA Bratwurst, Spicy Chicken, Lamb Merguez, and a Sweet Sicilian with customizable toppings, including their signature S&C Sauce, which Executive Chef Carlos SanMartano deems their updated version of ketchup. Looking for a vegetarian option at a sausage joint? Try the quinoa-filled veggie version wrapped in a cauliflower leaf. All sausages are made in-house or sourced from Orange County’s Europa Specialty Sausages.

Amaya La Jolla {1205 Prospect Street, La Jolla; 858.750.3695}

The sister restaurant of The Grand Del Mar is staking its claim in La Jolla with contemporary American cuisine in a casual setting. Entering through impressive oversized iron gates, you’ll be greated with Executive Chef Camron Woods simple, seasonal ingredients paired with an impressive 300-label wine collection designed to create an unforgettable dining experience. Check out their bar and lounge area to watch a game on the big screen, or sip on a coolly concocted cocktail or local handcrafted beer.

The Haven Pizzeria {4051 Adams Avenue, Kensington; 619.281.1904}

At The Haven Pizzeria, pizza is done simply—and right. Owner Lauren Passero of Kensington Cafe has combined forces with GM/Owner Kate Grimes and Chef Kevin Strombel to bring Kensington a quaint pizzeria that uses only quality products at a reasonable price. The Haven boasts a variety of appetizers and salads to preface your own pizza creation or one of their specialties, as well as local beers and wines to wash it all down. The Haven is family-friendly and offers a delicious kids’ menu for your tiny tots!

Queenstown Public House {1557 Columbia Street; 619.546.0444}

Inspired by the beautiful coastal mountain town in the South Island of New Zealand, Queenstown Public House offers the cultural fare of Kiwi-land with heaps of NZ beef, lamb, and seafood dishes that are mainstays in the locals’ diet. A staple in Australian and New Zealand breakfasts, Marmite/Vegemite is a yeast spread typically put on toast over butter. Don’t leave without giving it a go. After all, that is the NZ spirit.

Fish Public 4055 Adams Avenue, Kensington; 619.281.4014}

The next chapter for the Urban Kitchen Group is a new seafood-focused restaurant with a menu boasting some the world’s best coastal cuisine. Executive Chef Jordan Davis will head the Nantucket beach-inspired restaurant using the freshest catches of the Atlantic’s Gulf Coast, Baja, New England, and the Pacific Northwest. Think Grilled Octopus with artichokes, romesco, and arugula; and Housemade Tuna Conserva and scamorza cheese on rye. Mmm-mmm.

Green Dragon Tavern {6115 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad}

Old Hadley’s is finally getting a new look— a look that will be the new Green Dragon Tavern & Museum Colonial Village. Based on the Green Dragon Tavern in Boston, a former planning site for the Boston Tea Party, this rendition will feature a restaurant, pub, museum, gift shop, and meeting space with a colonial-themed ambience reminiscent of the Revolutionary War. With plans to hire local history teachers to enlighten students about the pilgrims and the colonial era, this dining experience will be both delicious and educational.

Burger Lounge {2720 Via De La Valle, Del Mar; 858.720.1200}

Del Marians rejoice! The 10th outpost of juicy Burger Lounge has opened in your 'hood, smack dab in the Flower Hill Promenade. A revamped menu makes the opening particularly delicious, featuring the same grass-fed beef goodness we all know and love, but with a few new twists—like the four-ounce Little Lounge Burger and healthy salads showcasing quinoa, baby squash, and some delectable housemade dressings. Oh, did we mention they're partnering with Karl Strauss Brewing for some suds on tap? That's right, Del Mar is where it's at.
